Building on a Budget

Building on a Budget is a tricky dilema for any home business owner. Whether you are looking to supplement your income or looking to replace your full-time income, for most of us choosing to start an online home based business, finances are usually pretty tight. This means that we need to choose carefully in the first place to ensure that we are not entering into a business with hidden financial outlay. Choosing the wrong business could mean that we will never get the thing off the ground in the first place!

Most of us are not in the fortunate position to jack in the day job to start up our businesses. Like I did, many of you will continue with your day job until you are able to convince yourself that you can indeed earn enough money doing something else.

Fortunately, there are many home based businesses that can be started with very little outlay and can be built over time on a part-time basis.

If you haven’t already done so, have a look at my page on Business Ideas to research the kind of business that might interest you before looking at the ideas for finance and budgeting here.

Cash Flow

No matter how good your product or service it is irrelevant if you don’t have any customers. Customers are required before you can generate any kind of cash flow and this is the difficulty that most people face.

In order to generate customers you will inevitably have to advertise in some form or another and most of us have to make decisions about how much to spend on advertising and at the expense of something else. Ultimately if you spend your money on advertising, you will have to sacrifice something else. Just make sure it is not the kids’ school uniforms and you should be ok!

In all sincerity don’t fall into the trap of overextending your financial resources. No matter what your business, or how it is run, you must be able to meet current bills when they come in so don’t get carried away.

There are actually many ways that you can promote your business without having to spend a great deal of money. Take a look at my section on Markting your Business for some ideas on free and low cost resources for advertising.

The main questions you need to ask yourself before joining up with a company, are

1) can you afford the monthly outgoings?

2) Can you afford to advertise your relationship with this business without immediate income?

If either of these answers are “no” then you need to seriously reconsider.
